Smail Alhilali is the Director of the Circular Economy and Green Industry Division at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He leads the organization’s global agenda on circularity, advancing industrial solutions that address climate change, biodiversity loss, and chemical and waste pollution while supporting sustainable economic growth and resilience.
Since joining UNIDO in 2007, he has held several senior leadership roles, shaping international initiatives on sustainable industry, resource efficiency, cleaner production, chemicals management, and environmental governance. With over 30 years of experience, his work spans regulatory frameworks, industrial transformation, and global partnerships across multiple regions of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Smail holds master’s degrees in nuclear safety engineering (INSTN, France) and mechanical engineering (EMI, Morocco).
